Herbie Hancock Added Inputs and Outputs to His Rhodes

Harold Rhodes came to the Lighthouse to hear an early version of his piano in public. He found that Hancock had already redesigned the instrument.

Harold Rhodes approached Herbie Hancock after the pianist’s band had played the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. Rhodes had come to see how an early version of his electric piano behaved on stage. Instead, he found extra connections fitted to the instrument. “You cannibalised my instrument! Why did you do that?” he asked.

The Rhodes begins with an acoustic event inside an electrical instrument. A key throws a rubber-tipped hammer against a metal tine, which is coupled to a tonebar to form an asymmetrical tuning fork. A pickup assigned to each note converts that vibration into a signal. The piano may present familiar black and white keys, but its voice depends on a separate conversation between metal and magnet under every one of them.

Hancock’s answer was practical: he wanted to use other devices with the piano. “Why don’t you put some inputs and outputs over on the side?” he suggested, adding that an XLR connection would also be useful in the studio. Rhodes adopted the ideas. The account does not identify the equipment attached that night, so the modification should not be turned into an imaginary effects chain.

A technician can shape the instrument before any external processor enters the picture. Changing the tine’s angle and distance from its pickup alters both level and harmonic content. A lower position relative to the pickup brings out more upper harmonics; another setting produces a rounder note. The Rhodes sound is recognisable, but it is not mechanically fixed.

Hancock later explained why the instrument worked so well in a mixed ensemble: “the Rhodes can hide in between the character of the acoustic instruments, or it can be on top.” The added connections extended that flexibility. They did not prescribe one effect or one signal path; they made the piano easier to place inside a changing electronic system.

“Butterfly” is included as an example of Hancock’s electric-piano language. No source establishes that the recording used the specific instrument Rhodes saw at the Lighthouse. The useful story is more modest and more revealing: a designer watched a musician work, discovered where the finished product was unfinished, and allowed the next version to learn from the alteration.
