SoundCloud Opens Direct Track Sales Without Taking a Commission

About 200 US-based Artist Pro creators can set a price and let listeners buy an MP3 or WAV without leaving the platform during the initial beta.

SoundCloud has begun testing direct music purchases with roughly 200 US-based Artist Pro creators who have Fan Support enabled. They can now sell eligible tracks from their profiles. SoundCloud says it takes no commission, although artists receive the sale proceeds after applicable fees and taxes rather than the entire amount paid at checkout.

A participating creator chooses the track and price, then follows purchases in Artist Studio and the Fan Support Dashboard. The listener pays and downloads the file supplied by the artist, such as an MP3 or WAV, without leaving SoundCloud. Access is meant to expand during the beta, with broader availability for eligible creators planned for the fall. That remains a timetable, not a platform-wide launch already completed.

The company says more than 250,000 artists have placed external sales links on 2.4 million tracks, sending over half a million listeners elsewhere to buy music each year. These are SoundCloud's own figures, useful as an account of the problem it wants to solve rather than an independently audited market measure. The new button tries to keep one decisive moment inside the track page: the point at which listening becomes payment.

Bandcamp offers a useful measure of the claim. Its published fee is 15 per cent on digital sales, falling to 10 per cent after an artist reaches $5,000 in sales, with payment processing charged separately. SoundCloud's zero-commission language therefore matters, but its current offer is much narrower. Only a small US creator group can use it. The real test will be how widely access expands and whether listeners still want downloadable files once the button is placed beside the stream.

White Iverson captures the older route. Post Malone posted the track to SoundCloud on 4 February 2015, while the page directed buyers out to iTunes. The beta attempts to place discovery and checkout in one window. Its important change is not another way to press play, but fewer steps between the orange waveform and an artist's account.
