Steven Wilson Picks Up Violin and Oboe for His New Album

Violin, oboe and drums gave Steven Wilson a way out of familiar habits while making Requiem for a Village. In his September 11 announcement, he describes “playing things I don't really know how to play” and finding unexpected inspiration in the results.

He also singles out unpredictable analogue synthesisers and instruments left imperfectly tuned. These are reported working choices, not evidence that every mistake deserves to survive an edit. The distinction matters: limited control can be something an experienced musician deliberately seeks.

The official album description places the music in an imaginary British village, with narration written by Andy Partridge and voiced by David Tennant. There is careful construction around those unruly sounds. Chance has been invited into a setting someone has already designed.

Fiction Records will release the album on November 6; a title-track performance is already available in The Village Hall Sessions video. Wilson has offered a method, not a general argument against proficiency. For this record, he wanted an instrument in his hands to surprise him.
